Published 2026 cost guides put an installed crawl space vapor barrier at $2–$4 per square foot, with most jobs between $1,200 and $3,000. The size of the crawlspace, the liner thickness, how many piers and pipes it has to be fitted around, and how much has to be cleared out first move the number. The written quote prices the vapor barrier on its own line, separate from anything else.

For a sealed crawlspace, Florida’s residential code calls for a continuous Class I vapor retarder over the ground with the seams overlapped and taped (section R408.3). Past that, thicker reinforced liners hold up far better to being crawled on and to roots and sharp ground. Going from a 6-mil sheet to a 20-mil liner adds only about 30 to 35 cents per square foot in material, so ask what thickness a quote includes.

It removes the biggest single source of moisture, the ground, which can be enough in a crawlspace that is otherwise dry. It does nothing about humid outside air coming through open vents, which is why a crawlspace that already has mold or rot usually needs the full seal and a dehumidifier.
